Is the Google brand bigger than its leadership?

With new reports on the health of Steve Jobs appearing (he has a hormone imbalance that has caused weight loss), it got me thinking about whether Google is so dependent on its leadership. (Oddly, the report on Jobs sparked a rebound in stock, likely because investors realized the CEO would continue on and deal with his illness over the next few months.)

  • Finally, Picasa for the Mac Submitted by Google Subnet on Tue, 01/06/2009

picasaGoogle announced that a beta version of its online photo-editing and sharing software, Picasa, is finally available for Mac OSX and is making its debut at this week's Macworld show. While Mac users in the past could use either an iPhoto plug-in or stand-alone upload tool to get their photos into Picasa, this is the first time they can use the actual Picasa software native on their Macs.

  • Privacy isn't Chrome's Achilles' heel, features are Submitted by Google Subnet on Mon, 01/05/2009

Google's Matt Cutts is once again defending Chrome and its privacy policies, hoping to assuage user fears that the new browser is really just another way for Google to keep tabs on users and their personal Web surfing. While the privacy issue does indeed seem to be dogging Chrome, the real reasons behind its rather lackluster uptake so far (it holds just 1% of the browser market, compared to IE's 68%) seem to be far more concrete in nature: It can't compete on features.

  • Google responds to Prop 8 AdSense debacle Submitted by Google Subnet on Mon, 01/05/2009

Site owners who sign up for Google's AdSense program decide to trust Google and its ability to target ads contextually, based on keywords and general site content. In this way, sites devoted to analyzing the mobile phone industry, for example, don't end up with a lot of ads for mobile homes. The idea is to match the site with the ads to generate more clicks, and revenue. Unfortunately, the day before the state of California was set to vote on Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, many sites having nothing to do with politics or gay marriage were flooded with AdSense-generated pro-Prop 8 ads, leaving many site owners far from enamored with Google.

Is the Google brand bigger than its leadership? by John Brandon

With new reports on the health of Steve Jobs appearing today (he has a hormone imbalance that has caused weight loss), it got me thinking about whether Google is so dependent on its leadership. (Oddly, the report on Jobs sparked a rebound in stock today, likely because investors realized the CEO would continue on and deal with his illness over the next few months.) Apple as a company is tied inextricably to a leader whose keynotes are legendary. More importantly, Jobs is viewed as the main...

Blogora, Blog + Forum Platform, Released as Alpha by Philipp Lenssen

David Mulder just Alpha-released Blogora, “a project to create a blogging platform tightly integrated with a forum”... and a project spun off by looking at how the Blogoscoped blog and forum functions. A bit of a back story: You might have noticed that Blogoscoped is both a blog and a forum, and that there’s some integration between the two parts. For instance, sometimes a forum thread will later on also be blogged, in the case of which you’ll see something like...

Assembling the Android army: Organizing the chaos by Mark Murphy

The "Assembling the Android army" series of posts is where I provide completely unsolicited advice to Google and the Open Handset Alliance on strategies and tactics for growing the base of Android developers, to better cement Android's place in the mobile platform marketplace. If you want developers to build on your platform, you have to make it easy for them to do so. Part of that is providing documentation and related information about how one builds applications for said...

How Do You Really Get To The Top of Google? by Jon Rognerud

There is a lot of hype on the Internet, from scammy money-making schemes, ridiculous in-your-face advertising, cloaked websites (you may not know it), and over the top sounding search engine strategies polluting your email in box daily. They all seem quite convincing at first. But, the adage "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is" comes to mind quickly. However, I'll attempt to set the record straight, clean up the clutter - at least when it comes to first page, top rankings in... 6
